The handkerchief originated in the 1st century B.C. They were referred to as perspiration or mouth cloths, the sudarium or napkyn. The handkerchief was also used by the Romans. They wore two: one tied around left wrist and the other one tied around the neck or tucked in at waist. There’s such an assortment of colors and sizes to choose from your options are virtually limitless.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Square Handkerchief
  • Assortment of sizes and colors of Handkerchiefs
Step1
Wet Down For Hot Days On hot days wet the handkerchief down and drape it around your neck. You can either tie it in place or let it hang loosely over your shoulders. Place it in the freezer for a few minutes. If going on a hike or outing, place frozen handkerchief in a cooler. Use when needed.
Step2
Old Fashion Tie Wear the handkerchief as a tie. It can be worn casually or elegantly. You can tie formally as a tie or you can place a tie band on it to hold in place.

Single Fold Handkerchief A square handkerchief can be placed in a suit pocket. Try the single fold or the wave.

First Fold For the single-fold: Fold handkerchief in half.

Second Fold Take left end and fold to middle section.
Step6
Third Fold Take right end and fold over left fold.
Step7
Single Fold Handkerchief The single-fold looks very stylish and smart.

Wave The wave looks hip and stylish.

Wave Folds Lay the handkerchief flat. Pick up the middle section. Tighten with fingers from bottom where you picked it up to the mid section. Place bottom to mid section in suit pocket. ~ Click on photo to see details better. ~

Over The Head The handkerchief can be worn over the top of the head and tie in the back to get the same look as the American Idol contestant.

Mouth Covering You can also wear the handkerchief over your mouth to keep pollutants out of your lungs. On cold days this also keeps the harsh cold from your lungs and the wind from your face.

The Finished Look Place the handkerchief around your neck and tuck it into your shirt for a finished look.

Shawl Like If you have an over-sized handkerchief drape around your shoulders as a shawl affect.

Pooch Attire My dogs love their red handkerchiefs. They sport them well.

Summer Bonnet Add a handkerchief to your summer hat or bonnet for a soft touch.
