Embroider a KNIT fabric with your home Embroidery Machine

How to embroider on a KNIT fabric such as Fleece sweatshirts or Tee shirts. Keeping the designs from puckering is easy when you know the simple secrets

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cut away Stabilizer
  • adhesive Spray or scotch tape
  • Tee shirt or Sweatshirt
  1. Step 1

Turn you shirt inside out. Tape the Cutaway on the outside corners to hold it in place till its hooped (Or you can use a temporary adhesive spray on the top to hold it)
USE a Light weight Cutaway like NO SHOW or SOFT N SHEER on Tee shirts and polo shirts, and a medium weight or heavy weight inside a Sweatshirt, the higher the stitch count or thread density the heavier the cut away stabilizer you need.

No show and Soft n Sheer are available at Zieglers Embroidery Supply
They also offer FREE online embroidery lessons

  2. Step 2

Turn the garment right side out, fold in half, lining up the shoulders and the sides, now finger crease the center fold or iron so you have a centering line for your hoops. Loosen the screws on the hoops so that when you push the top hoop into the bottom hoop you DO NOT pull the fabric.
Then tighten you screws on the hoop

  3. Step 3

    Now embroider as usual.
When you are done, unhoop and Cut the excess stabilizer away, careful not to cut the stitches.

THE SECRETS...Use the right Cutaway for the fabric and keep the fabric and hoops loose when you hoop.

Tips & Warnings
  • REMEMBER if you pull a knit tight in the hoop, when you remove the hoop your fabric will try to spring back into its original place...and your garment will look puckered. DO NOT PULL A KNIT. Keep it loose.
  • if using the adhesive spray, do so sparingly and in a well ventilated area. Do not use the spray where the embroidery design will be.
