Step 1
First things first, you need to empty your cabinets and sort through the clutter. It's best to sort items closest to where the item will be used. For example, place spoons in a drawer near the sink and potholders near the stove. This will prevent you from crossing the room every time you need something.
-
Step 2
Attach bins inside your cabinet doors to prevent lids and other loose items from falling out of place. This method of organization is a big "yes" in my kitchen.
-
Step 3
Store coffee pots, filters, and cups near each other. This will allow you to make that first, tasty, cup of coffee as quickly as possible.
-
Step 4
Try clearing your counter tops. Consistency is the rule of thumb. If that kitchen gadget gets the most use, keep it out. If not, try storing them in a cabinet. Not only will it be more organized, but it will elevate the clutter.
-
Step 5
Hang cutting boards on the wall
-
Step 6
Line shelves to make them easier to clean but make sure to stay away from paper that may stick to your shelves.
-
Step 7
Alphabetize spices and can goods. You can also try buying a spice rack to have easy access.
-
Step 8
Add wire racks and tiered storage to add cabinet space.

on 7/21/2009 This is the second article I have read that says to alphabetize spices. Why?? I have at least 30 different spices. I am not rooting through a bunch to get to the season salt! I sort mine as to use. Thanksgiving type (pumpkin pie spices, sage, etc) go in one spot, the ones I use the most (garlic, onion powder, black pepper) go closest to my stove.
Then you have spices like Chili Powder, which should be in the refrigerator. I sort as to size, season and how often I use them.

on 6/22/2008 I put all of my baking supplies in one cabinet over the counter where I do my baking. Makes it so much simpler!
