Multi-Level Marketing requires marketing know how. Getting started is a stumbling block to many new distributors. This article features basic MLM marketing ideas to get you started.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Develop a plan of attack based on your potential market. Not all MLMs are created equal. Before you signed up with an MLM you should have identified who your client base is. Once you get started, obtain or produce advertising materials like business cards, flyers, brochures and other forms of information to promote (or market) your business.

  2. Step 2

Now that you have the basic yet essential materials, its time to develop a strategic plan of attack. Get the word out. Most MLM products are home based items, so you have a large consumer base. The days of door-to-door sales are dwindling as laws are passed preventing such activity. So get some exercise and go for a walk. Find consumers where they are and you have a possible sale. Customers can be found where you shop, eat, play, go to church, work, in your neighborhood... all around you. Pass out your materials, meet people face to face and develop personal relationships. Keep your marketing materials with you at all times, you can't afford to miss an opportunity to gain a customer or downline distributor.

  3. Step 3

Be prepared. When making cold contact (uninvited solicitation) with potential customers be prepared to answer questions about the products. If a customer or potential customer shows interest or expresses favor in the products you offer or expresses need for more money, be prepared to share the business plan. You have to be prepared to offer both components of your business at a moments notice. The two components are; 1. Buying/Using the products, 2. Becoming a distributor.

  4. Step 4

The internet can be used as a marketing tool, however for an MLM it will usually account for 20% or less of your sales. MLM depends heavily on personal relationships, contact and service. It's hard to recruit other distributors without being able to enforce the benefits of MLM personally.

  5. Step 5

Keep it real. Remember, success in any MLM depends on your ability to recruit successful distributors. Start slowly, build a customer base through sales. Approach your more dedicated customers to become distributors. The successful higher ups in sales for most any MLM did not arrive there overnight (although sometimes it seems that way). Most have been doing their thing for 10 or more years and built a large downline of distributors. Sales commissions are low and you will never become financially independent from sales alone. The MLM wasn't designed to work that way. Your income is derived from building a downline of distributors because that is the marketing tool that makes the company successful. When they are successful from having more sales people, you are rewarded and your income multiplies. Keeping this in mind will help you succeed and know what your goals need to be.
