Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Cold water detergent
- Energy effeciant light bulbs
- Observing techniques to critically look at your thermostats in your house
Step1
Energy Star Compliant?
Check all appliances for energy efficiency before buying. A furnace should have a AFUE rating of at least 80; air conditioners should have a SEER of 10.
Step2
Inspect burners
Have a professional service technician clean and adjust the burners or standing pilot lights on all gas appliances.
Step3
Save money
Install dimmer switches to save electricity and lengthen the life of light bulbs.
Step4
Turn off your water heater when going on vacation, even a short trip.
Step5
Cold Water
Wash clothes in cold water detergent to save on hot water. Wash only full loads of clothes.
Step6
Lower your costs
Turn down thermostat in the house by a few degrees, each degree above 65F degrees will add about 3% to your water heating costs. (Turn the air conditioning thermostat up to 80F degrees in the Summer)
