A zombie costume is one of the truly classic Halloween costumes. The makeup and flesh effects are the most important elements to make sure that your zombie looks authentically undead. Adding rotting flesh and making your zombie look like it's decaying is easy to do.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shadow the face first. Add rotting effects after you have applied white latex and the black paint for shadowing effect. The black shadows should be applied primarily along the cheekbones and around the eyes to give the zombie face a sunken, hollowed appearance. Finish these steps first so that color you add to create a rotting effect can complement the shadowing.

  2. Step 2

Apply red coloring to create a bruised, bleeding look. The red will make your zombie look like it's experienced trauma and like its face is rotting away from the inside.

  3. Step 3

Use a small brush and slow, small circular motions to apply the red makeup and make the rotting effect look more natural. It's not necessary to make the circular motions all go in the same direction, but using this technique allows you to better replicate the appearance of rotting flesh.

  4. Step 4

Add color sparingly and reasonably to make the rotting and bruising effects look natural on your zombie. There should not be bright spots or streaks of any color on your zombie face. Bruising and rotting on a corpse occur gradually, and using subtle coloring will make it look like this is happening to your zombie.

  5. Step 5

Highlight with accent colors. Add other colors like green and purple around the areas where you've added the red. Purple will look like the flesh is bruising or that there is blood pooling under the skin, and the green will make the zombie face look infected and diseased.

  6. Step 6

Play up the details if your zombie was created or killed in a specific way. If your zombie was re-animated as a result of a nuclear explosion, add a little bit more green or even some fluorescent coloring to the face so that the zombie will glow in the dark. Accenting your zombie with certain colors will make your zombie as unique as it is scary.
