Things You'll Need:
- Acoustical mat or other sound insulating material
- Wood studs
- Saw
- Screw gun and screws
- Sheetrock
- Acoustically insulated window
- Acoustical caulk
- Hollow core door
-
Step 1
Create a room within a room. In order to have a professional studio, you need to isolate the musician from any extraneous sounds the recording equipment or individuals make. Line the existing walls, the floor and ceiling with acoustical mat, studio foam or insulation.
-
Step 2
Install the studs for the studio over the insulation, spacing them at 8-foot intervals. Put them on the floor and ceiling as well to create an airspace in those areas.
-
Step 3
Build the walls to the ceiling, making sure you leave be no opening at the top of the studio walls. Any open area emits sound and allows other sound to enter.
-
Step 4
Put a window and doorway in the framework. You need to have a way to communicate with the artist and recording experts. Also make sure that you frame in a doorway.
-
Step 5
Insert double paned glass windows. Theses are not normal windows but two pieces of laminated glass with one at an angle to the other. The air space in between the two traps the sound and prevents its reflection. The opening should be 1/4 inch wider than the window and should be sealed off with acoustical caulk.
-
Step 6
Add another layer of insulation material all the way around the inside and also on the outside of the walls that aren't butted against existing walls. Drywall every wall, then sand and seal. Spray both inside and outside walls with acoustical stippling.
-
Step 7
Remove the top of a hollow core door and insert foam insulation. Close the end by gluing the wood back down. You can also purchase special doors for the studio.
