Step 1
Place yourself in a hapkido defense position when facing an opponent. Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart, your dominant foot drawn behind your body. Prepare for a block by placing your hands at chest level, positioning your dominant hand slightly back and below the non-dominant hand. Remember that most hook punches will be aimed at the side of your face or the side of your body.

Step 2
Watch for the hook punch, and as your opponent begins to swing his arm forward, lift the arm which is on the same side as his and slap the outside of your wrist against his inside forearm, pushing his arm away before he has a chance to make contact.

Step 3
Draw your opposite arm forward, pushing with the heel of your hand to strike your opponent in the lower jaw, throwing her head back. Move the hand which you used in defense against the hook punch to grab the outside of her elbow and quickly step to the side.

Step 4
Grab your opponent's wrist with your opposite hand while continuing to grip the elbow and pick up the wrist and you push down on the elbow. This will cause your opponent to drop to the floor. Squat down, placing one knee at your opponent's neck and the other at the lower back, holding him on the floor. Use this opening to call for help.
