While many people believe you can only get quality color at a professional salon, store bought dyes get better all the time and when used properly can give you stunning results at a fraction of the cost. The most important part of dying your hair at home is choosing the correct color. A few tips can help get you pick correctly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a hair color which is no more than three shades lighter or darker than your natural color. Going more than three shades darker than your hair color can end up looking strange and will almost always look very unnatural. Going too light will also seem odd, but will also severely damage your hair.

  2. Step 2

Select colors that go well with your skin tone to keep your color looking as natural as possible. If you have pale skin, you are in luck as almost any color will work for your. However, if you have dark, olive or yellow skin you should stick to dark, rich colors while those with a pink complexion should pick neutral tones, such as sandy blonde or chocolate brown.

  3. Step 3

Get a bit wild when picking your hair color, and go with silver highlights, purple hues or even a touch of blue. When selecting wild colors, pay special attention to the colors of clothing that suits you. If you have never looked good in orange, you won't look good with orange hair either.

  4. Step 4

Test the color before you buy. Regardless of the color, you should always hold a sample or similar color to your skin to make sure that it complements your skin tone. If you like a color but it doesn't seem to go well with your complexion, try a shade lighter or darker and you may find the perfect color for you.
