You will need to take some time to research the technique you wish to use and will need to gather the supplies necessary for faux painting.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bucket with water
  • Clean rags
  • Container with lid
  • Brushes
  • Paints, glazes, additives and top coats
  • Sponge and feather
  • Trowel and squeegee
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of faux finish you want to do. There are numerous types of faux techniques such as ragging, color wash, stenciling, sponging, brick and old world finishes.

  2. Step 2

Have a bucket to for your water, and you’ll also need several clean rags.

  3. Step 3

Get a container just large enough to hold to keep your paint mixture in. It is a good idea to get one with a lid in case you don't finish painting and need to save your paint.

  4. Step 4

Obtain good brushes to use in faux painting. The faux technique you decide on will determine what specific type of brushes you need. There are blender, dragger, dappler, stencil, stippling and specialty brushes available. You definitely need at least one good 4-inch paintbrush to do faux painting.

  5. Step 5

Use quality glazes, additives and paints. Whether you are using lacquers, varnish, metallic paints or crackles, you need to get products designed for faux finishing use. Read the directions on each product for mixing and use instructions. Make sure you use a clear top coat to finish off your faux painting.

  6. Step 6

Sponge or feathering techniques require the use of proper equipment. A sea sponge is best for any sponge painting, and use a goose feather for vein effects.

  7. Step 7

Create heavier textures using a trowel. A striae brush will create texture lines while a glaze squeegee will work your glaze evenly into textured surfaces.

  8. Step 8

Shop at your local decorating supply store or check out Internet websites like Paint Store Online to find all of your faux painting supplies. See Resources section for link.
