A well-trained dog makes for a happy owner, a happy dog and a much happier public outing. An important command in your dog's repertoire is the down by side command. Training a dog to perform the down command by your side can take just a few minutes of work every day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Training Collar
  • Six Foot Leash
  1. Step 1

Put your dog in her training collar and leash. Ask your dog to sit next to you on your left hand side, facing the same direction you are.

  2. Step 2

Grip your dogs leash in your right hand. Place your left hand on his leash, right next to where the leash snap connects to the collar.

  3. Step 3

Say your dog's name to get her attention.

  4. Step 4

Press down and in towards your leg with your left hand while firmly saying "down." This pulls your dog's body down and into your leg.

  5. Step 5

Praise your dog for cooperating and attempting to lie down.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this process for up to 5 minutes, giving lots of praise and treats when your dog lies down. It doesn't matter how long she stays in the down position, she did what you asked and deserves lots of praise. If you're not making progress, you can find a professional trainer at the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some dogs are motivated by treats, so combine treats with praise. Playing to your dog's interests will increase the rate at which she learns.
  • Keep your temper when obedience training your dog. You can easily make him afraid of you by losing your temper with him when he is simply confused about what you're asking.
