To do long layer hairstyles require experience in working with and shaping long hair. Many hair stylists and some individuals are experienced but may seek additional help in successfully creating long layers for their clients. Long layer hairstyles tend to last longer and look fuller as the style gets older.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine which kind of long layer hairstyle you want. View magazine hairstyle examples, printed pictures and maybe even drawings of the type of hairstyle you want.

  2. Step 2

Cut, or have the hair cut, with precision cutting scissors so that each section of hair that you cut will be slightly shorter than the next section. This is what causes the layered effect. The hair will form in layers around the head and the wet hair will shrink as it dries which will also increase that layered look.

  3. Step 3

Dry and curl the hair with a blow dryer and curling iron for a more dramatic, layered look. Tight curls do not look as sleek as loose curls so use a big barrel curler when you do long layer hairstyles.

  4. Step 4

Pin up the back of the hair with bobby pins or hair clips in a bun or cascading style to create an updo style. This long layer hairstyle is very versatile and convenient for busy people.

  5. Step 5

Curl the hair on small barrel curling irons to create a mini-curl, layered effect. As these curls loosen, the hair will gall into soft, wavy curls that seem to graduate on the head. This is what also creates the layered look.

  6. Step 6

Pull all of the layers of hair into a ponytail. Some of the layers will inevitably fall out, which is what you want, as this creates an unkempt, bed-head look. Curl hair with a big barrel or small barrel curling iron to create a fun look before pulling hair up.
