Step 1
Ensure the person receiving the foot massage is comfortable. People receiving their first foot massage can be apprehensive. Many people have sensitive feet, so assure them that you are going to use long strokes and will stop if they are in any way uncomfortable.
-
Step 2
Soak the person's feet in warm water for about 10 minutes before you start the massage. Make sure it is not too hot, but still comfortable. Dry their feet completely.
-
Step 3
Sit the person in front of you. Tell them to lean back and relax. Sit on a stool and position their foot in your lap. Make sure they are in a comfortable position so they will enjoy the massage.
-
Step 4
Apply lotion or massage oil. Warm the lotion or oil in your hands before applying to the foot. Use long strokes and apply pressure according to reflexology charts.
-
Step 5
Study the points of the foot. According to reflexology and Thai massage, different areas affect the body differently. Focus in on different areas to give a well-rounded foot massage. Use long strokes in these areas and avoid pushing directly on any bones.
-
Step 6
Watch for signs of discomfort. You want to make sure that the person enjoys the massage. As you are working, be aware of facial expressions, tension or sudden movements. These are signs that something hurts, tickles or is causing discomfort.
-
Step 1
Learn the kneading technique. This uses your thumb and fingertips. Do this on all areas of the foot. In the kneading technique, you push down with your thumbs and roll up with the thumbs and fingers. Pay attention to areas that correspond to reflexology charts.
-
Step 2
Use arch presses. Use one hand to support the ankle. With your other hand, apply pressure with the heel of your hand. Push hard as you move the heel of your hand down the arch of the foot and back up again. This relieves tension in the arch. This area of the foot can take more pressure, but remember to look for signs of discomfort.
-
Step 3
Relax the ankle and foot with ankle rotations. Firmly hold the lower leg, just above the ankle. With your other hand, grasp the ball of the foot. Rotate the foot first in one direction for several rotations and then the other way.
-
Step 4
Apply the stroke technique. This stimulates circulation of the foot. Lightly press your fingers into the top of the foot. Bring your hands up to the ankle. Reverse the move and stroke down the foot. Repeat this technique several times.
