Staying in hostels while traveling is an excellent way to save money and is often associated with students or backpackers. By packing only a couple of outfits, you can travel lightly, which makes it much easier to get around on public transportation or on foot.

Instructions

    Before You Leave

  1. Step 1

Buy clothes made out of quick-drying synthetic materials. Look for underwear with both anti-bacterial and quick-drying properties. Shop at outdoor or camping supply stores.

  2. Step 2

Choose items of clothing that can be versatile depending on the weather and formality of the places you are visiting. Pants with zip-off legs may not look very stylish, but they are lightweight and save you from having to pack a pair of shorts in case of a warm day. Find a button-down shirt where the long sleeves can be rolled up into short sleeves.

  3. Step 3

Pack the bare minimum of outfits. Two short sleeve shirts, one long sleeve shirt to layer over them or wear on its own, and one fleece pullover or jacket is sufficient on the top. Take two pairs of pants so you can wear one while washing the other. If you are expecting cold temperatures, include at least one set of thin silk long underwear.

  4. Step 4

Bring a very small sample size package of laundry soap suitable for hand washing. Include a travel clothesline in your luggage.

  5. While You Are Traveling

  6. Step 1

Rotate through your outfits, and wear them as long as possible before washing them. Wear deodorant, and avoid doing activities that make you sweat in order to make the clothes stay fresh longer.

  7. Step 2

Wash your underwear in the hostel sink with the laundry soap you brought. Hang them overnight on the travel clothesline. Be careful not to hang the clothesline where it can disturb other hostel guests.

  8. Step 3

Choose a hostel with laundry facilities when you need to wash all of your clothes. If there are none available, ask the staff at any hostel where the nearest laundromat is located. Use laundry detergent available in the laundromat. This is not the cheapest option, but it does save you from having to carry the detergent around as you travel.

  9. Step 4

Buy new clothes if they are needed while you are traveling. Get something specific to your location, and the clothes can be considered a souvenir.
