If you have ever thought that maybe you should try to do your part to help the environment by going green, then that is great. However, if you don't have any money to buy those special light bulbs, then it's time to get creative.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty plastic bottle with a lid
  1. Step 1

Turn down the thermostat on your water heater. Try to take your showers as quickly as you can. If the water is still getting cold before you are done, turn the thermostat up just a little bit at a time until the hot water lasts just long enough for your showers.

  2. Step 2

Set the direction of your ceiling fans according to the season. If it is hot outside, the fan should rotate counterclockwise. This will pull air down toward you to cool you off more efficiently. On the other hand, during the cold months the fan should rotate clockwise. This will displace the hot air that naturally rises to the ceiling, keeping the rooms warmer.

  3. Step 3

Fill an empty juice bottle or soda bottle with water and replace the cap. Place it in your toilet tank where it won't obstruct the toilet mechanisms. Now your toilet will use less water.

  4. Step 4

Raise your thermostat a few degrees during the summer months and lower it a few degrees in the winter. You will likely be surprised at how much electricity you save.

  5. Step 5

Unplug electronics such as microwaves, computers and televisions when you aren't using them. These items will continue to use electricity when plugged in, even if you turn them off. In addition, always turn off light bulbs when you leave a room.

  6. Step 6

Recycle items like aluminum cans, tin cans and plastic bottles. Contact your local recycling center or trash service and ask if there is a pick up service for these products. Many towns and cities have them.

Tips & Warnings
  • All of these steps will help you go green without spending money, but most of them will also save you money on your electricity and water bills.
