Instructions

    • 1

Choose two slices of your favorite bread for making your mayonnaise and cheese toast. Thicker sliced bread works best so it doesn't tear in the middle, allowing the melted cheese to escape. Using whole grain bread makes the sandwich healthier.

    • 2

Place a slice or two of cheese between the slices of bread. American or cheddar cheese are the most common for making cheese toast, but other cheeses such as gouda, swiss or velveeta also make delicious mayonnaise and cheese toast and can add nice variety.

    • 3

Spread mayonnaise on the inside of one of the slices of bread. You can put mayonnaise on the inside of both bread slices if you wish.

    • 4

Butter the outside of both slices of bread and then place the sandwich into a frying pan or skillet.

    • 5

Cook the bottom side of the sandwich until the butter melts, the bread starts to get toasty brown and the cheese begins melting.

    • 6

Turn the sandwich over using a spatula and grill the other side until it also gets toasty brown. By that time the cheese and mayonnaise should both be completely melted.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also make this sandwich open faced, using only one piece of bread. If making it this way, you can not flip it over part way through, so set the burner a little bit lower so your cheese fully melts before the bread burns.

  • If you like the taste of black pepper, try sprinkling some onto your mayonnaise before grilling your sandwich.

  • Give your mayonnaise and cheese toast a minute to cool before biting into it; the filling is very hot and could burn your mouth.
