How to Make a Decorative Wreath

Wreaths were originally made from evergreen branches for Christmas and symbolize everlasting love and life. You can make decorative wreaths from a variety of materials for any occasion, or to simply add a special touch to your home. A few simple tips can give you some great ideas for making your own unique wreath.

Things You'll Need

• Polystyrene wreath
• Decorative items (ribbons, bows, dried flowers, baby items, beach treasures, toys, candy, etc.)
• Wide ribbon
• Straight pins, diaper pins and or safety pins
• Hot glue gun

Instructions

1. Purchase a polystyrene wreath from your local craft store. Polystyrene wreaths are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your particular needs. Available in circles, squares, triangles and even heart shapes, there is a decorative wreath for every occasion.

2. Gather the materials you would like to use for your decorative wreath, getting creative to make your own unique design. You can use baby pacifiers, socks and other items to create a special baby shower wreath. Collect fast food toys with your children and then use them to create a fun wreath for your kids' room. Use found beach items such as shells or drift wood, Halloween candies and ornaments or make a classic dried flower wreath.

3. Cover the base of your polystyrene wreath first. There are a number of ways you can cover the polystyrene, however the easiest method it to wrap the foam with wide satin ribbon. Choose a ribbon that matches your them and then attach it to the base with straight pins. As an alternative, you can attach all of your items and then fill in the empty spaces with dried flowers.

4. Decorate your wreath with your chosen items. Sucker sticks, dried flowers or bows wrapped with wire can be inserted directly into the polystyrene. Other items such as baby booties, seashells and toys can be attached by applying hot glue to the item and attaching it directly to the ribbon. If you prefer not glue your items, try diaper pins, safety pins or straight pins for easy removal.
