Pack your emergency kit in a waterproof container. Zip close thermal lunch bags and some small coolers work great, as they prevent water from leaking in and also float in the case that you will be rafting or boating while camping.

Make sure that you include a flashlight and extra batteries in your emergency kit. Not only can a flashlight help you find your way in the dark, it can also be used to signal others in case of emergency. You should also pack a whistle in your emergency kit, as it too can help signal others in case you get hurt or lost in the woods.

Keep your drinking water clean and pack either a water filtration system, water purification tablets, or both. This will ensure that even if you run out of bottled water or happen to get lost in the woods, you will have plenty of clean water to drink. Make sure you read the directions of your tablets or water purification system before heading off on your camping trip.

Additionally, a pocket knife, fish hooks and fishing line are emergency kit essentials in case you have to make a pole and fish for dinner.
