Call ahead to the campsite and ask if the area has clean running water. If not, pack some purification tablets in your pack to clean water for drinking and cooking. For best results, boil the water first and then add the tablets, making your water perfectly safe and eliminating the need to carry jugs of water.

Prepare for all types of weather by bringing along warm, waterproof clothing when camping. To keep your pack light, carry one fleece jacket and go with one pair of heavy duty pants and some fleece long underwear in case it gets cold. Additionally, you can roll up light weight rain gear and strap it to the outside of your pack. It weight next to nothing, but will keep you warm and dry in the rain.

Pack a lightweight pair of water socks in your pack. If hiking while camping, you never know when you may have to cross a stream. Taking of your boots and socks and crossing with water shoes will prevent your boots from getting wet, while the light weight water socks take up very little space and weigh even less.

Choose a down sleeping bag, as they are made to be extremely warm and roll up small and light. Additionally, you might consider buying a special lightweight tent made from heavy duty material made particularly for light weight camping.

Bring along food which is light to carry, hearty and expands when cooked. Great camping foods include rice, beans, oats and other grains. A few small bags of these foods can fit neatly into your pack and last for days. As for cooking utensils, look for special made camp pots which are made from light weight material and fit snugly one inside the other for easy packing.
