How to Sell for a School Fundraiser

Kids are involved in so many extracurricular activities, sports teams and clubs that require them to sell everything from cookies to wrapping paper that by the time they're asked to sell for a school fundraiser, everyone's experiencing a bit of burnout. But schools need extra funds for playground equipment and classroom supplies, so follow these steps for successful school fundraiser sales.

Instructions

    • 1

Compile a list of potential customers. This list should include everyone you know who you think might buy the product. Write down the names of family members, friends and neighbors you can contact.

    • 2

Compose a mission statement, if you don't already have one from the school or fundraising company. Write a one-line description of what you hope to accomplish with their help. Be clear and concise about your purpose.

    • 3

Keep the fundraiser information with you. Wherever you go, be sure to bring your order forms and brochures because you never know when a selling opportunity will come your way. If you also bring along the informational paperwork, you can answer any questions customers have.

    • 4

Define your goals. Decide before you head out just how much you want to sell. Let your customers know your total goal, how much you've already sold and how close you are to reaching your goal. When they know they're a part of you succeeding, they're apt to buy more.

    • 5

Hit the streets. Face-to-face contact is the best way to optimize your sales with your neighbors and others when practical. Just be sure to have an adult with you at all times and ask that she carry the money inconspicuously for you.

    • 6

Utilize your telephone and computer. For friends and family that live out of personal reach, pick up the phone and do your selling long-distance. Or use the family computer to send out emails to others who live far away.

    • 7

Suggest a personal favorite. When selling your products, point out to your customers which is your favorite flavor, type or item. This way, they'll know that you stand behind what you're selling because you actually use it yourself.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to personally thank each customer or those who helped support your school fundraiser.

  • Don't sell for your fundraiser after dark if you're soliciting door-to-door.
