Get a Child Ready for Back to School

If the summer is coming to a close and fall is on the horizon, back to school time can't be far away. For some children, going back to school is a welcome change while other children dread the idea of getting back to the classroom. However, you can help excite your child about going back to school and help them get ready for the change ahead of time. Here’s how to help your child get ready to go back to school.

From Quick Guide: Back-To-School Checklist
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go over important school information with your child. Be sure that your child knows his teachers' names and his classroom numbers. Go over your child's class schedule as well.

  2. Step 2

Shop for school supplies and school clothes with your child. For many children, back to school shopping can be a lot of fun. Make sure that you take your child's school supply list with you when you go shopping. Let your child help pick out their school supplies, as well as a backpack and some back to school clothing.

  3. Step 3

Help get your child used to the new school routine. Talk with your child about when they will have to go to sleep at night and when they will have to get up in the morning. Try out the new bedtime and wake up time with your child for at least one week prior to the start of school. This will make the change in routine much easier.

  4. Step 4

Take your child to their school before the school year starts. Doing so will allow you to find their classroom and their school locker (if they have one). You may also be able to meet your child's new teacher and introduce yourself and your child.

  5. Step 5

Talk to your child about the upcoming school year. Ask her what goals she has for the new school year and what activities she hopes to get involved in. Tell him how exciting it is to go back to school and try to instill that sense of excitement in him.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plan to find the location of the school bus stop ahead of time, if your child will ride the school bus.
  • If your child will be in a new school for the upcoming school year, go on a tour of the new school building with your child. You may want to find the locations of some important places in the building such as the gymnasium, the cafeteria and the library.
