Once you learn the basics on a Tech Deck, it's time to begin a little more advanced technique. You can keep busy for quite a few years learning flips, slides, grinds and combinations. One of the first more advanced tricks to learn is the 50-50 grind on the Tech Deck. It takes some practice but is a lot of fun once you know how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tech Deck
  • Rail or book edge to execute the grind

Step1
Start with your fingers in ollie position. To do this, put your index finger on the board's logo. You can put either your ring finger or middle finger on the board's tail.
Step2
Lift the board by tapping on the tail with your middle finger. This is also referred to as popping the board. Push forward gently with that finger at the same time
Step3
Raise your middle finger as the board rises in the air. Then, level the board with a little pressure from the index finger that's in the middle of the board. Level it out so it can land on the edge of the track with the trucks of the board. You need to ollie high enough to be able to level the board on the rail.
Step4
Land so that both the front and back trucks are on the edge of the rail. For a 50-50 grind on a Tech Deck, both trucks need to be on the rail.
Step5
Ride the length of the rail in grind position on the Tech Deck and ollie off the rail to a flat surface. You complete the ollie exactly like you normally would with the index finger in the middle and the middle finger on the tail. Pop the board and level it off as it goes down toward the flat surface. You can also just push off and keep the board level as you ride it off the rail.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice the ollie and make certain that you can execute this trick extremely well before you attempt to do a grind on the Tech Deck. The successful completion of the ollie is important to get into grind position.
