How to Do Nice Things for Parents

Your parents make sacrifices for you, work hard to provide the things you need and offer constant support and unconditional love. It's time to show them how grateful you are for everything they do with nice, unexpected gestures that they'll appreciate and treasure.

  • Surprise your mom by completing chores on your own, particularly if she typically has to nag you. Clean your room, empty trashcans or fold and put away the laundry, for example.

  • Give your parents a hug and say, "Thank you." You can buy them a nice trinket or a make a sentimental card, but simply letting them know that you appreciate their patience, love and advice will mean the most to them.

  • Cook them a meal. Even if it's just frozen waffles with a garnish of sliced strawberries and store-bought orange juice for breakfast, they'll love the effort. Be sure to clean up the kitchen when you're done, so the gesture doesn't create more work for mom.

  • Turn the tables and help parents with their "homework." If they're doing taxes, for example, offer to put receipts in order or do simple data entry. Tackle things they hate like washing their cars or picking up the dry cleaning. Find ways to make their lives easier.

  • Spend a nice day together filled with laughs and conversation, especially if they claim you don't communicate enough. Talk about your aspirations, regrets, friends, school experiences and worries. Find their wedding photos and your baby pictures and let them reminisce. Go to lunch, see a movie or walk around the mall. Let your parents know that they're still cool enough to hang out with.
