How to Convince Someone to Let One Have Something
Your friend has something that you want, but that you can't find or afford. You know that he doesn't appreciate or enjoy it as much as you would. Use these tactics to convince him to let you have the one item that you can't live without.

1
Ask nicely, honestly and without beating around the bush. Hinting may make your friend feel manipulated. Simply tell him that if he's no longer using the item, you'd appreciate it and put it to good use. List the ways it will help save you time or money and how much enjoyment it will bring you.
-
2
Discuss how giving the item to you would benefit him. For example, if your friend's mother won't let him have new purse because he's got too many, offer to take one off his hands. If he needs more space to accommodate a new bookcase, ask for the unused chair that's cluttering the corner of his room.

3
Offer to trade for something you've got, particularly if you're asking for a fairly expensive item. Ensure he doesn't feel taken advantage of and that his parents approve of the exchange.
-
4
Show your gratitude if he does give you something he once loved. Send him a card, take him to dinner or repay the favor whenever you can. Showing your appreciation may also make him willing to give you another item if you ask later.

Tips & Warnings
Don't manipulate or bully a generous friend into giving you something. Avoid pursing the issue if he doesn't want to release the item. Give him the option of asking for the item back.
