Posture and form are both important factors in Irish dancing. There is a very formal and precise way of holding your body while performing the steps that must be learned by anyone wanting to study Irish dance form. This form basically involves close fists, straight arms and erect posture.

Instructions

      Stand with your feet about should width apart. You want to get your upper body set in the form before you worry about your feet.

      Raise your head until your chin is parallel to the floor. You will want to keep your head in this position as you dance.

      Close your hands into fist with your thumb inside your fingers. Place you thumbs against you palm and fold the rest of your fingers over your thumb. Keep your fingers in this position.

      Push your shoulders back and hold your arms at your sides. To get into the correct position, raise your arms over your head and then pull your arms down toward your sides. This motion will get your shoulders and arms in the correct position.

      Have your hands with your palms facing inwards.

      Shift your feet so that your heels are touching with your toes pointing outward to each side. Your feet should form a V.

      Keep your feet pointing in the same directions and place your right foot in front of your left. The toes on your left foot should touch the middle of your right foot. This is the start position for most Irish dancing.
