Planning summer vacation in your home state is a great way to explore local tourist attractions and learn more about the history of your area. It also makes it easier to entertain visitors. Vacationing in your home state is a budget saver, allowing you to do more than if you travel further from home.

From Quick Guide: Vacation Spots Near You
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate a travel guide for your state. Your local city government agencies may have these available, or you can find them online or at your local library. Travel guides provide you with a list of attractions in each area of your state.

  2. Step 2

Search out the unusual things in your state, like the largest ball of string or the biggest skillet. Taking photographs of your family with such oddities will make your summer vacation fun and unique.

  3. Step 3

Go on hikes and nature walks through state parks.

  4. Step 4

Rent a cabin at a local campground. Find a campground that has a recreation center and a swimming pool. If there are stables close by, you can recreate summer camp with your family.

  5. Step 5

Visit historic locations. Every state has museums and historic homes that are interesting to visit and available for tours.

  6. Step 6

Make several small trips rather than one large vacation. Doing this allows you to visit more of your state and enjoy more of your summer as a family.

  7. Step 7

Check out the lakes and rivers in your area for fishing, swimming or boating. Most lakes will have boats and skis available for renting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Search out free attractions. Many cities have free outdoor concerts, plays and movies for the family to enjoy together.
  • Let each member of the family choose one destination. By getting everyone involved, each member is invested in your summer vacations and more likely to show enthusiasm.
