Popcorn chicken has been a staple in the American diet for many years. One doesn’t have to go out to eat to get good popcorn chicken. It can be made at home using a few simple ingredients and some frying skills.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Chicken breast meat
  • Coating
  • Cooking oil
  • Deep-sided frying pan
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels

Step1
Gather all ingredients. Boneless chicken breast meat is the easiest to work with.
Step2
Mix the coating. There are a million different recipes and any one made for regular fried chicken works great for popcorn chicken, too.
Step3
Use a sharp knife to cut the chicken breast meat into bite-size pieces.
Step4
Toss the chicken pieces in the coating.
Step5
Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep-sided frying pan. Test the oil by dropping a bit of flour in the oil. The oil is ready when tiny bubbles form around the flour. Carefully place the coated chicken pieces in the oil in small batches. Adding too much popcorn chicken at once can cause the temperature of the oil to drop.
Step6
Watch for the chicken to turn golden brown. After approximately 3 minutes, remove a piece of the popcorn chicken. Cut it open to check for doneness. The meat is white when the chicken is done.
Step7
Use a slotted spoon to remove the popcorn chicken from the oil and drain on paper towels. Let the oil heat back up before adding another batch of popcorn chicken.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean all areas and utensils used to cut the chicken.
  • Always exercise caution when handling raw chicken.
  • Be careful when frying the chicken, as the oil is extremely hot.
