Things You'll Need:
- Scissors
- Cotton swabs
- Food coloring (optional)
- Colored cellophane
- Pinking sheers (optional)
- Marker
- Straws
-
Step 1
Cut a cotton swap in half to make the centerpieces of your straw flowers. If you like, you can dip the tips into food coloring to add an extra touch to your straw flowers. Make sure that the cotton dries completely before continuing with your flowers.
-
Step 2
Lay out your colored cellophane and cut into shapes approximately 3 inches across. You can cut squares, circles, triangles or use your imagination to make your own unique flowers. You can use standard scissors or pinking sheers for a different look. Cut three shapes of the same size for each flower, using the same or different colors.
-
Step 3
Place your cellophane pieces one on top of the other; however, to give your flower body, make sure that the edges are not lined up perfectly. Find the center of your flower and mark it with a small dot using a marker. Set your cellophane petal pieces aside.
-
Step 4
Squeeze your straw about two thirds of the way from the bottom and cut a very small hole in the side, being careful not to cut the straw in half. Make a similar cut about 1 inch below the first on the opposite side of the straw. Cut four pieces of green cellophane in the shape leaves, making them any size you wish. Hold two of the leaves together and gently push the tips of the cellophane into a slit cut in your straw using the tip of your cotton swab and then repeat with the other hole and the other two pieces of green cellophane.
-
Step 5
Hold onto your cellophane petal pieces and place the stick of your cotton swab into the center dot. Push the cellophane layers around the stick, twisting slightly so that the cellophane is tightly wrapped around the stick.
-
Step 6
Push the cellophane wrapped cotton swab into the straw. Make sure that you push part of the cotton itself into the straw to hold in in place. Create as many flowers as you like using a variety of shapes, colors and sizes.
