Let's say you're in in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Or maybe someone has mistakenly believed you were out to cause mischief. It'd be great to know how to signal others that your intentions are peaceful, or that you wish peace upon someone else. Now you can. Simply raise your hand and give the peace sign. The peace sign is an immediately recognizable symbol that no one can misconstrue.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Free your hand of any objects. You can’t give the peace sign effectively if you have anything at all in your hand.

  2. Step 2

Raise your hand, palm facing forward, with all fingers and thumb extended.

  3. Step 3

Lower your pinkie finger, ring finger and thumb, placing your thumb over the two lowered fingers.

  4. Step 4

Widen your middle finger and index finger so that they form a "V."

  5. Step 5

Keep your hand still so everyone can see the peace sign. Once you know everyone understands your intentions, lower your hand to a natural position to end the peace sign.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hold your hand high, your arm fully extended, to "shout" your message of peace.
  • Hippies consider a low peace sign, just above waist level, even more non-threatening and "cool."
  • Watch the face of who you're giving the peace sign to so that you can gauge their response.
  • Either hand works fine for giving the peace sign. Use the hand you're most comfortable with.
  • The peace sign isn't always well received. Giving the peace sign doesn't ensure a peaceful response from someone else.
