Step 1
Make a list of everything you think you will need, taking into consideration where you'll be going, the climate there and how long you'll be gone. If you're hiking, remember that temperatures vary greatly as you gain altitude. The best way to dress for outdoor activities is in layers, so pack accordingly.
-
Step 2
Research other peoples' packing lists online. Just about every destination will have a visitor's guide, and you can double-check your list against lists of people who have been there. This is also a great way to find out more about your destination, and gain insight or tips you might not have known about otherwise.
-
Step 3
Lay out everything on your list in groups: shirts in one pile, pants in another, socks and underwear and toiletries. Take a second look to be sure you need everything you've selected; people often over-pack, but in backpacking, you may not have the room (or the back strength) to carry anything you don't absolutely need. Discard any extras.
-
Step 4
Remember to pack food, sleeping bag and tent if you'll be hiking or camping. Bring money, passport and travel books if you're traveling in a foreign country. Bring and wear appropriate footwear and clothing for whichever mode of backpacking you're doing.
-
Step 5
Fold or roll each item and place in your bag. Rolling utilizes all of the space and tends to be effective. Determine whether your items will fit comfortably. Place toiletries in sealed containers to prevent leaking. Remember to pack things like a first aid kit and any seasonal necessities such as sunscreen.

Step 6
Get a good night's sleep and prepare yourself for an amazing adventure on your backpacking trip.
