People like to put collars on cats for different reasons. If your cat is wearing a collar this allows you to attach id tags with your phone number, so if your cat gets away and someone finds her they know where to call. Some people like to put bells on their outdoor cats collar to warn birds and small animals that the cat is in the area.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a break away collar for your cat if she goes outside. A break away collar allows your cat to get loose of the collar if she gets it hung up on a branch or other obstacle.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the collar so it fits your cat loose enough that you can stick two fingers between the cats neck and the collar. If there is excess collar sticking off of the end, cut it off. Extra collar sticking off past the closure might irritate your cat and make him resist wearing it.

  3. Step 3

Bring the collar into the room where your cat is and let her sniff it and play with it for awhile. This allows her to get used to the collar and learn that there is nothing to fear before putting it on her.

  4. Step 4

Give your cat a treat to distract him while you put the collar on. The treat might also serve to give him a positive association with the collar.

  5. Step 5

Put the collar on the cat quickly. Tell her how pretty she looks with her new collar, and play with her for awhile to distract her from the collar.

Tips & Warnings
  • It might take your cat a few hours to calm down and accept the collar. If he is still resisting the collar after a day or two, you might want to take it off for a little while to give him a break. Each time you put the collar on, leave it for longer periods until eventually the cat accept it.
