How to Add a Friend to Yahoo! IM

Your best friend just left to travel through Europe for a few months and wants to keep in touch while on the road, in real time, not just through email. No problem. With a few taps on your mouse and keypad and quick installation by your friend, the two of you will be chatting online in less than 15 minutes.

Instructions

1. Sign in to Yahoo! Instant Messenger as if you are doing a normal chat. Click the word "Contacts" at the top of the page then select "Add a Contact."

2. Type in your friend's email address, making sure you spell it correctly, then click "Next."

3. Select which group you want her user name under in your personal list. Look at the way your name will appear to your friend in her introductory email and change it if you want a different name.

4. Add a personal message if you want then click "Next." If you would rather not leave a personal note, it's fine to leave this area blank.

5. Tell your friend to check his email. Your invitation will show up in your friend's email box from Yahoo! with specific instructions on setting up his own Yahoo! Instant Messenger account and installing the program.

6. You now see your friend's name on your "Friends" list, and you can communicate once she installs the program and sets up her own account. Remind her to double click on your name if she wants to chat with you.
