With so many hurdles to face, inventors feel challenged to remember each phase in the process. Streamline the many steps involved in bringing an invention to market by making an Invention Decision Chart. You can prepare the Invention Decision Chart using graphics presentation software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, or as a memo on any word processing program.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Start with a blank document. Title it "Invention Decision Chart."
Step2
Plan to use text boxes to contain the action items. Alternatively, draw arrows pointing from one action item to another to indicate the next step of a process.
Step3
Write the word "invention" in the center of the top of the document. Add a box underneath it directing the inventor to note the idea. Then direct the inventor to make a model of the invention and to test it. Instruct the inventor to document each event by date and description.
Step4
Describe the invention's commercial appeal next. Direct the inventor to create something else if the invention has no appeal. Otherwise, direct the inventor to decide on the creation's patentability and whether the inventor intends to complete a patent application.
Step5
Insert text requesting the inventor to consider whether the product is innovative and marketable. Direct the inventor to create something else if the answer is no. Otherwise, instruct the inventor to get a trademark and complete a copyright application.
Step6
Make a box questioning whether the inventor intends to market and distribute the invention himself. If so, direct the inventor to maintain it as a trade secret. If not, direct the inventor to sell the creation to a manufacturer.
Step7
Add a final box telling the inventor to begin manufacturing and selling the end product as long as the original invention remains hidden. Then direct the inventor to file a patent application.
