Step 1
Research vacuum cleaners to find the model you are interested in buying. Check all the regular avenues for reviews, resale value, price comparisons and consumer response. This can be found on the Consumer Reports website or in their magazine. Some shopping sites like ebuyingguides.com have comparison tools to use while shopping.
-
Step 2
Locate a used vacuum retailer in your community or city. Often vacuum repair shops sell used models. This is a good avenue to pursue since they will have already checked over and repaired any problems with the unit. It is unlikely, however, they will offer a warranty. Also, ask about the used models at retailers or consider garage and estate sales.
-
Step 3
Inspect the used vacuum cleaner thoroughly before purchasing. Look at the cord, brushes, casing and other basic components of the vacuum. Check for damage. Ask to plug the vacuum in and make sure it works. Listen for motor problems, as a slow motor or whining noise often indicates damage or excessive wear.
-
Step 4
Take the used vacuum to a vacuum repair shop to check it over. This is really only after you have already purchased it; try to get a 24-hour guarantee from the place or person where you purchased it, to allow you to take it back to them if there are any major problems within the first 24 hours.
