How to Hem the Sides of a Curtain

If you want to add color, flare and your own personal touch to a room, you can make curtains. Making curtains is simple and even a beginner can create good custom curtains. You can begin by learning to hem the sides of curtains. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pre-cut curtain fabric
  • Tape measure
  • Fabric marker
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  1. Step 1

    Take the pre-cut curtain fabric and put it on a flat surface.

  2. Step 2

    Get the tape measure and from the edge of the side measure in 1 inch. Make a mark with the fabric marker.

  3. Step 3

    Fold the fabric over and make sure it is 1 inch all the way down the side.

  4. Step 4

    Keep the fabric in place by putting straight pins down the side. This also ensures that the hem is even.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for the other side of the curtain.

  6. Step 6

    Place the fabric on the sewing machine and lower the press foot. Begin to machine stitch the hem all the way down on the first side.

  7. Step 7

    Repeat Step 6 for the other side.

Tips & Warnings
  • Note that the instructions are only for the side hems. You also need to sew the bottom and top hems of the curtain.
  • Before you start to sew the curtain, you need to cut the fabric to the required size of the window. Remember to make allowances for sides, top and bottom hems.
  • You can make a double hem by folding the curtain over 1 inch and press. Then fold over again 1 inch, press and pin it down to sew.
