Dance the Melbourne Shuffle

The Melbourne shuffle is a distinct underground movement that finds its roots in the Australian dance scene as far back as the 1980s. As music trends continue to evolve, so does the shuffle, which is gaining in popularity and style. Pick up the basics to join in the party.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and transfer your weight on to the front of your right foot. Pick your left foot off the floor so you are standing on one foot with that heel off the floor.

    • 2

Angle your right foot to the left so that you are using the front of your foot as a pivot and then transfer the weight onto your heel. Repeat the step, toe to heel so you are moving along the floor.

    • 3

Tap your left foot along the ground in the same direction in between your pivot steps so that the action is independent and moves on the beat directly after your right foot. The sequence should now be toe, heel and then tap with your left foot.

    • 4

Repeat the same process but this time begin with the weight on your left foot and move left to right with the right foot making the tap. This is a basic shuffle step and you can move from one point to the other and back again with the beat of the music.

Add your arms to the shuffle by moving them up and down or side to side with the beat. There are no distinct rules about how you should move your arms in the shuffle so do your own thing as long as you stay with the beat and rhythm of the music and coordinate with your steps.

Incorporate new movements by adding the non-moving shuffle, which is the same sequence but on the spot without traveling. This requires better balance so practice as you go and find your own style.
