A mosaic headboard is a novel way to change the looks of an old headboard. It’s also a great way to recycle old pottery and ceramics items that you may have lying around your house. So find out how you can change some of your “trash” into a new “treasure.”

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Headboard
  • Pattern
  • Newspapers
  • Masking tape
  • Pottery and other glass pieces
  • Pillowcase
  • Hammer
  • Gloves
  • Glue
  • Grout
  • Trowel or putty knife
  • Sponge
  1. Step 1

Find a pattern for the headboard mosaic. It can be a free-style design or you can use a motif such as a heart pattern. Determine if you are going to cover the entire headboard with mosaic or just the central design.

  2. Step 2

Lay the headboard flat on your work surface. If you are only using part of the headboard for the mosaic, cover the rest of the headboard with newspapers sealed off with masking tape.

  3. Step 3

Gather your pottery. Place it inside an old pillowcase. Gently tap the pottery with the hammer to make small pieces for the mosaic.

  4. Step 4

Put your gloves on. Glue the backs of the pottery pieces and place them closely together on the headboard in a manner that suits the pattern you chose in Step 1. In addition to the broken pottery, you can add flat-sided marbles, small mirror tiles and whatever other kind of glass bits that you find at the local craft store.

  5. Step 5

Mix the grout according to the package directions. Use a small trowel or putty knife to work the grout into all the crevices between the glass pieces. Let the grout dry.

  6. Step 6

Dip a sponge in water so that it is just barely damp. Wipe away the haze on the glass pieces. Be careful not to get the grout too wet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Discard the pillowcase after use. It may still contain small pieces of broken glass.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands while you work on this project.
