How to Deal With Overprotective Parents

Having overprotective parents is very stressful and makes children feel like they are living in a bubble. Most overprotective parents don't allow their children to experience new things or hang out with their friends. The best way to deal with overprotective parents is to convince them to let you experience new and exciting things in life. This may be a hard job, but the results will be well worth it.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange a family meeting with your overprotective parents. Having any siblings present that are close in age will be helpful at your meeting. Together, you and your siblings can present your cases.

    • 2

Discuss with your parents that feel like you are not cultured and that you are living in a bubble world. Give examples of times when you missed out on things that your friends were able to enjoy and explore.

    • 3

Ask your parents if they will start letting you have a bit more freedom. Try to compromise with your parents and start off slowly. If they say no to something, try to understand and try again next time.

    • 4

Convince your parents to allow you to be unsupervised for a short bit of time and work yourself up slowly. First see if they will let you go to a museum with a friend and allow them to pick you up afterwards.

    • 5

Build your parent's trust. Provide them with examples of how well behaved you are and remind them that you are a good student. Your overprotective parents may be this way because they want you to keep up with your studies. Ask them if you can provide them with a report after you attend a museum or theatre with a friend.

i am 18 years old and my parents never allowed us to do anyhing without them... i feel like they stripped my of my individuality... i have a hard time realting to anyone my age because i simply d o not relate to anyone... all my life i've acted the way they wanted me to act, i've said what they've wanted me to say, i've felt what they've wanted me to feel, believed wha they wanted me to believe, and thought the way they've wanted me to think... i feel aloof from the world... it feels like George Orwell's novel 1984... i am no longer human, just a shell that parrots what they want... it is really frustrating to feel indifferent to everything and everyone because thet took everything away... there are parents that don't care at all for their kids and it is harmful, but parents that are too overprotective arejust as harmful...
