How to Do a Backside 180 When Skimboarding

You can skimboard recreationally or as a competitive sport. It is similar to hydroplaning on the sand. "Backside" means that your back is facing the body of water, so a backside 180 means you are turning 180 degrees with your back to the water. Doing tricks on the board is fun, but it requires practice so you can avoid injuries.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Throw the skimboard into the water to get it moving. Make sure the board's middle hits the water first, with the back following next to guide it.

  2. Step 2

Step on the board by putting one foot on and then the other, rather than jumping with both feet simultaneously, so you don't lose speed. Start riding as you normally would.

  3. Step 3

Turn your head down towards your shoulder while looking backwards.

  4. Step 4

Shift your weight and rotate your shoulder enough so your back turns 180 degrees.

  5. Step 5

Stay balanced on board to complete the 180 degree turn.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to know how to do a basic ride before attempting a backside or any other trick.
  • If you think you are going to fall, roll or slide out of it rather than catching yourself to avoid unnecessary injuries.
  • Because there are no skegs (fins for controlling direction), a skimboard is more difficult to control. Take this into account when performing tricks for the first time.
