Although most people don’t consider streets to be a safe place for riding kick scooters, and designers of the kick scooter didn't intend them for street use, some people still stray from the sidewalk. If you are going to ride your kick scooter on a street, follow these steps to stay safe and reduce your risk of severe injury.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wear protection on your head, elbows and knees at all times. Use wrists guards as well. Even if you do have an accident, you aren’t as likely to sustain a fatal injury.

  2. Step 2

Stay as close to the curb and as far away from traffic as possible. Pay close attention to the road and keep an eye out for potholes, grates, trash and other things that could cause you to fall.

  3. Step 3

Be on the lookout for vehicles at all times. Keep yourself free from distractions, such as cellular phones and any portable music players. If you can’t hear properly, you may not hear an approaching car.

  4. Step 4

Choose sturdy shoes that won’t slip on your scooter even if it gets wet. Your shoes should also be strong, yet comfortable.

  5. Step 5

Remember that it is not the responsibility of the vehicles to keep an eye out for you. You need to take the initiative to keep yourself safe when riding a kick scooter in and out of the streets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t wear sandals while riding a kick scooter, whether you are on a street or not.
  • Don’t ride on highways. Stick to low traffic residential areas instead.
