You can create an entire new look for your bedroom when you sew curtains and add them to your four-poster bed. Depending on the style of curtain you choose, the curtains can be super simple to make or something that you might find on the pages of a home décor magazine. Do take your sewing expertise into consideration as you pick out your curtain pattern.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Measure the Curtains

  1. Step 1

Measure the length of the four bed rods on your four-poster. If the bed doesn’t have rods, purchase some rods and install them.

  2. Step 2

Determine how long your want your curtains to be. For curtains all around the bed, a valance length is a good choice.

  3. Step 3

Figure how much fabric you need. Take the length of the rods times three to add fullness in the gathers. Add two inches per curtain for the side hem. Now take the length and add three inches for the top hem and another two inches for the bottom hem.

  4. Step 4

Take your measurements to the fabric store. Let the trained staff help you figure out how many yards you need based on your measurements. Different widths of fabric require different lengths. Also allow extra fabric to match any repeating patterns or motifs.

  5. Step 5

Purchase the necessary amount of fabric. If it is washable, pre-wash the fabric and dry it.

  6. Make the Curtains

  7. Step 1

Lay the curtain fabric on a flat surface. Pin the pattern on to the fabric. If you aren’t using a pattern, cut the pieces. Make sure the edges are straight.

  8. Step 2

Turn the side edges to the inside and pin them in place. Stitch in place.

  9. Step 3

Fold the hem up. Sew it in place.

  10. Step 4

Make the curtain rod pocket. Fold the top hem down three inches. Sew in place.

  11. Step 5

Run the rods through the rod pocket and hang the curtains. If you are using curtain rings instead, clip them to the curtains and then place them on the rods to hang them. Adjust the ruffles.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can’t find a length of fabric that you like, consider using sheets instead.
