Playing guitar is a wonderful hobby for some and a means of income for others. Sounding terrific is the key to a successful session that results in just the right intonation and feeling. Proper adjustment of the neck and string tuning are just a few methods of achieving a great sound.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Inspect the strings before going any further in the set-up process. String damage or stretching will affect the final sound of the guitar. Replace any worn or damaged strings immediately.

  2. Step 2

Buy an electronic guitar tuner and live by it. These handy devices cost very little and offer a precise reading of the guitar's tune and pitch. These simply plug into the guitar's cable port or just rest near the instrument while setting it up and tuning.

  3. Step 3

Look at the neck of the guitar for any signs of wear, cracking or warping. A warped neck will never be in tune for very long and needs immediate professional attention. Adjusting the neck truss rod is a delicate procedure best left to professionals.

  4. Step 4

Measure the height of the guitar strings on the neck. Each player has their own preference when it comes to string height or "action" of the neck. Many prefer very low on the fret strings for a faster play, while higher on the fret strings provides a consistent smooth play. Adjust string height as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean the guitar while it is being set up. Wipe down the instrument with a soft cloth and remove dust and debris.
  • Buy a DVD or video for guitar set up. These are available at most music stores or online and cost very little. These tutorials are invaluable when first learning how to set up a guitar.
  • Never try to adjust the guitar's truss rod without understanding the procedure fully. Failure to understand this process will damage the guitar.
