How to Scream in a Hardcore Punk Band

For lots of punk bands, nobody needs a lesson in screaming. On the other hand, there are common sense things every vocalist should be aware of, and ways to come out on top in the punk rock world. Here are some suggestions for making your band as effective as it should be (some learned through chaotic experience).

Instructions

    • 1

Free your inhibitions. The best punk screamers know how to let loose. When fronting a punk band, you'll need to be able to let your freak flag fly.

    • 2

Try softening your vocal chords. Using techniques when you're screaming helps protect your voice. One option is a sound not unlike Rancid front man Tim Armstrong's throaty howl; there may be more than one reason to choose that kind of vocal style. After a while, the raw sounds of amateur punk rockers can take a toll on your voice.

    • 3

Amp up your mic. Another way to make sure you're not wearing out your vocal cords is to get your microphone volume up above the fray of your frenetic drummers and high-octane guitars. Don't let your voice get lost in the mix.

    • 4

Control feedback. Along with volume on your mic, you'll need good feedback control. The sudden eruption of screeching, agonizing sounds during a song is sure to make the audience wince, and maybe that's what you want, but there's no reason to overdo it. Try to be in control of feedback to avoid a total sonic meltdown.

Create your own style. Just "screaming" may not be what you want to do. A more diverse vocal style can get your band higher ratings and bounce you into the public eye. The key to success in the music entertainment world is creativity and originality, not just screaming.
