How to Invite an Acquaintance to a Party

Take the big step--you've been dating for a few weeks and your friends are throwing a party and inviting you as a couple. Follow these suggestions to introduce your new love interest to your pals and make the situation comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.

Instructions

1. Invite your boyfriend or girlfriend to your friend's party and discuss the reason for the event if it's a special occasion. Brief them on the possible guests, including their background, personality quirks, sense of humor and how long you've known them. Be honest so there will be no surprises.

2. Discuss your new love interest with your friends. Let them know what her personality is like so they can modify their typical behavior, if necessary. If your girl is reserved, for example, tell them to rein in their raucous humor and constant swearing.

3. Ask the host if you can invite additional guests. Extend an invite to friends that your new boyfriend has already met so he'll have a number of people to make him feel at ease.

4. Tell her to be herself and that she doesn't have to try to impress your family and friends at the party. Make it a no-stress situation. Place no expectations on the meeting or tell her that she'll "fit right in," for example.

5. Start topics of conversation that will allow everyone to participate. Bring party games that the group can play to become accustomed to each other without pressure.

• Don't become so engrossed in an activity or conversation with one of your friends that you abandon your new girlfriend or boyfriend. Imagine how you would feel sitting in a room full of people who are essentially strangers. Continually check on, talk to or involve your partner when you're interacting with others.
