Horses are extremely intelligent creatures and can sense your fear, discomfort or insecurity. Horses can begin to take advantage of an inexperienced rider, ignoring commands and playing boss. If you feel that your horse is beginning to take advantage, it is time for you to step up and gently assert your dominance. A few tricks can help.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Approach your horse with extreme confidence. Walk tall with your head up and place yourself in a dominant role. Your horse is a large animal and you must respect one another; however, you are the boss. If you believe that you are in command of your horse, he will believe it as well.
Step2
Say "No" firmly if your horse begins to kick, pin the ears back or show other defiant behavior. Remain calm and gentle in your actions, but force the horse to do what you are asking. If you allow the horse to get away with their behavior, she will learn that she is stronger and can take advantage of you. If you are persistent and remain calm, not giving up until she obeys, she will learn that it is best to do what you say.
Step3
Demonstrate to your horse that he should follow your command, regardless of the actions of other horses. When riding with one or more horses, try to command the horse in opposite actions. For instance, if the lead horse goes right around a tree, guide your horse left. If the other horse is walking calmly, take your horse to a trot. These actions will prevent your horse from simply following the leader, and show him that he must listen to you at all times.
Step4
Reward your horse for her good behavior. When she listens to your commands, give her a pat. When she saddles up without taking advantage, feed her a small treat. In this way you will not only earn the respect you are seeking from your horse, you will also build a lasting bond with her.
