When it comes to cooking steak, we all know that small changes can make a big difference. Especially when you are using a cheaper cut of meat. Here are some tips on how to create savory steak using cheap seasoning and cheap meat. Your family will be begging for the secret recipe.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cheap cut of beef
  • Salt
  • Meat thermometer (optional)
  • Additional seasonings (optional)

Step1
Place the beef on a plate or platter. Make sure to lay your beef out singularly. Don't stack the meat as it needs room to breathe during this process.
Step2
Salt the beef liberally. This doesn't mean just sprinkle a little salt. This means douse, cover, completely drown out the steak in a sea of white. When you are finished, it should look like a salt lick. (Don't worry, you will not be ingesting that salt.)
Step3
Repeat the salting process on the other side.
Step4
Allow the steak to sit out for 1 hour. Keep the steak at room temperature unless it is oppressively hot. At which point you'll want to put it back in the fridge so it doesn't spoil. Cover with a piece of wax paper to keep the steak clean.
Step5
Rinse the steak with warm water. Now that the salt has had a party with the protein cells of the steak, it's time to wash it off.
Step6
Pat the steak dry. Don't worry about making the steak completely dry. You want some of the water to enter the steak through osmosis. This will naturally occur now that the salt has "opened" the cells.
Step7
Fire up the grill and cook the steak to your liking. This is where it is best to use a meat thermometer to ensure that you are cooking the beef correctly. Find the appropriate internal temperature for how you like your steak and cook until it reaches that threshold.
Step8
Pull the now savory steak off the grill and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before serving. This will allow the juices to rest within the steak making that first slice even more tender.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can place additional seasonings such as garlic, rosemary, basil or other herbs over the salt when seasoning. This will add to your savory steak recipe.
  • Use this recipe to save money by buying cheap cuts of meat and seasoning them so they taste like fillet mignon.
