How to Change the Icon of Removable Drives

If you're bored with the default icons for your removable drives, you can change them. Customize the icon for your memory cards, USB sticks and other removable drives with a few simple steps. Use your favorite icons to make your removable drives stand out, and change them whenever you want.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Search your computer for icons to use for your removable drives. Click the "Start" button and choose "Search." Click "All Files and Folders." In the top box, "All or Part of the Filename," type in ".ico." The results will display on the right side of the screen. Right-click the icons that you want to use and copy them to the desktop.
2. Browse the Internet for more icons. There are lots of free icons available. Make sure the icons end in the ".ico" extension. Download the icons and save them to a folder on your desktop so you can find them easily.
3. Click the Windows "Start" button. Click on "Program Files" and "Accessories." Open "Notepad."
4. Type "[AutoRun ]" on the first line of your notepad window. Hit the "Enter" key to make a new line. Type "Label= " followed by the title you want to display under the icon for the drive. Create a new line. Type “Icon=" followed by the name of the icon you want to use.
5. Select "File," "Save as" from the menu. Save the file as "autorun.inf." Exit Notepad.
6. Copy the icon and the "autorun.inf" file to your removable drive. Right click the items and mark them as "Hidden" so that you don't accidentally delete them.
7. Remove the drive from the computer. Reconnect it to see the new icon.
