How to Build a Penn State E-Portfolio

What better way to highlight all you have learned in college than with an e-portfolio. Penn State University provides a convenient tool for its students to do just that. Even if you don't attend Penn State, you can use many of the ideas and guidelines from this article to create your own e-portfolio.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Understand why you should make an e-portfolio. You can show evidence from coursework that you have mastered particular concepts. You may display artifacts (such as photographs and email) from extra-curricular and philanthropic activities and you can provide reflective commentary related to these experiences that demonstrates how these activities have affected you. Creating an e-portfolio may be a requirement to graduate. The added benefit of creating one is that it helps you to gain additional technological skills.
Step2
Organize your thoughts and information before building an e-portfolio. Things you may want to include are academic samples such as papers, projects, theses, lab work, campus life involvement such as clubs, sports, Greek life, volunteerism and multimedia evidence such as movies, slide shows and music clips.
Step3
Define your e-portfolio's purpose and decide its audience. If you want to enter the Peace Corps after graduation, your emphasis and focus is different from those using their e-portfolios to attract potential employers or graduate schools.
Step4
Take the Penn State e-portfolio "Creating Web Pages" and "Designing Web Pages" tutorials. See our Resources for more information. You can view these tutorials even if you do not attend the school; keep in mind, however, that you cannot utilize all available resources, such as free Penn State web hosting.
Step5
Evaluate your portfolio. Penn State provides a convenient rubric to ensure that you meet all requirements for the portfolio.
Step6
Publish your portfolio. Have a friend critique it for spelling and grammatical errors and to ensure you didn't leave out anything important.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only Penn State students and faculty can actually create e-portfolios using the provided website.
