Step 1
Center your mind and focus on the person, thing or concept to which you will bow. Try to make a mental list of why you are grateful and use this energy to give out with your bow. The Hindu tradition states that that which you give will come back, so bow with love, with honor, with respect and with thanks.

Step 2
Place your palms together with your fingertips together and placing up towards your heart. Your hands should rest naturally at your center, the tops of your thumbs aligned with the bottom of your chest plate. Remember that your left hand represents your consciousness, or siva, and draws energy to you. Your right hand represents shakti, or the energy of nature, and is how you send energy out.

Step 3
Lower your eyes and then bend forward at the hips, keeping your back tall and straight as you lean forward. The forward action of the bow in the hindu tradition represents the energy of your conscious being bowing in appreciation for the divine, which resides in the heart of every living being.

Step 4
Say the word, "namaste," pronounced "naa-ma-stay," when you reach the lowest part of the bow. This word when vocalized, which means "I bow to you," helps to send your loving energy out to be received by the person or object you are honoring. Lift back to standing, lift your eyes and release your hands.
