  • Pen
  • Sales circulars
  • Coupons
  1. Step 1

Make a list of your shopping needs before you leave home. Keep in mind the number of meals you need to cover with that fifty dollars as you make the list. Think cheap. Beans, franks and hamburger meat make reasonably priced meal ideas.

  2. Step 2

Check the sales ads for stores in your area. Try shopping in stores that you haven't tried before in order to take advantage of their sale prices.

  3. Step 3

Discover a discount food store near you. This should not be difficult if you live near a big city. Discount stores often carry comprable brands to your regular supermarket.

  4. Step 4

Buy only the items on your list and make sure your list is full of necessaties. You won’t be able to keep within your budget unless you do.

  5. Step 5

Find and use coupons for as many items as you can. Buy generic or sale items whenever possible.

  6. Step 6

Keep this list for the next time you go shopping. It helps to see what you got for fifty dollars previously, and encourages you to do it again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try keeping your food budget on a spreadsheet file so that you can update pricing and items each week.
  • Remember to allow money in that fifty dollars for taxes. You don’t want to have a shock at the cash register.
  • You should never go grocery shopping when hungry.
